
Course Overview
This course is designed to introduce educators to influences and factors of second language acquisition as part of the English Language Learner identification process and how to provide an inclusive educational experience that supports personal identity and beliefs in the classroom environment. This foundational knowledge aims to support and equip educators with strategies to develop culturally responsive practices and research-based instructional practices to provide English Language Learners access to grade-level curriculum designed for their learning needs.

Second Language Acquisition & Identification: Understanding the key factors and processes involved in second language development to properly support English Learner identification and individual student needs.

Language Domains & Proficiency Levels: Analyzing the four language domains (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing) and applying English Language Proficiency (ELP) levels to guide targeted instruction.

Culturally Responsive Environments:Β Fostering inclusive classroom cultures that validate students' cultural backgrounds, personal identities, and linguistic assets.

Research-Based EL Instructional Strategies: Implementing evidence-based instructional practices, language scaffolding, and visual/linguistic supports across content areas.

Designing Accessible Grade-Level Instruction:Β Planning integrated lessons that provide English Learners with full access to rigorous, grade-level curriculum while building language proficiency.
